LIBRARY RULES  
 

Strict silence must be observed inside the library. Group study and discussion are not permitted in the library.

Books, umbrellas, bags and such other articles should not be taken into the library. They may be left on the benches provided for the purpose at the entrance. However each person may take one note book into the reading room for the purpose of taking notes.

Number of books a student can borrow at a time from the library: - Degree - 3 , Post-Graduate - 8

Books borrowed from the General Library must be returned within a fortnight, and they can be renewed for a further period of a fortnight if no one else has applied for the same book.

Students of the Junior classes will be allowed to borrow two volumes each during summer vacation.

Application for books must be made on prescribed forms available at the counter.

Though alternative books may be applied for in the same form, only one book will be issued on one application form.

If a student gets no book on his application form, the form will be returned to him. It will be his responsibility to call at the library and collect either the books applied for or the refused application form.

Absence from the college will not be accepted as an excuse for not returning the books in time.

If the due date of return of a books falls on a week end or short holidays the books must be returned on the next working day.

Books borrowed for use during Onam, Christmas and Summer vacations should be returned not later than the third day after the reopening of the college.

Final year degree and P.G students may keep the books only till the issue of their hall tickets.

A fine of 10 Ps. per day of default on each book will be levied in the case of books not returned on the due date.

If on the date on which a book falls due from a student, he is absent from the college on grounds of continued illness or any other exceptional circumstances of the kind it shall be competent for the Principal to replace the fines accumulating during the day of the student absence by a nominal fine of 10 Ps. per book provided the student makes special representation to him.

A member of the college hosted can claim the benefit of the smaller fine only if she/he is absent from the hosted as well as from the college.

Borrowers shall be responsible for the books which stand as borrowed under their names. If a book is noticed to be damaged at the time of issue the attention of the Librarian should be called to the fact. All marks made in the books will be considered as damage.

The loss of a book should be reported to the Librarian as soon as possible. The borrower is liable to pay the default fine on the book till the date of such report and from that date he will be held responsible for replacing the lost book or paying the cost of replacement of the book.

All the books borrowed from the General Library by students and members of teaching and non-teaching staff must be returned by the 15th of March every year for the annual physical stock verification of the Library.

No one can borrow more than one copy of the same book except for use in the college and with the express permission of the Principal.

Hall tickets for University examination and transfer certificates will be issued and caution deposit refunded only after clearing all the dues to the library.

Member of the teaching staff can borrow six books at a time from the General Library.

From each of the other Sectional Libraries they can borrow two books at a time.

A member of the teaching staff can borrow 20 books from the Sectional libraries. No member of the teaching staff is permitted to borrow more than a total of 30 books without the specific sanction from the Principal Note: 30 books include 20 books from concerned Sectional Library, 6 books from the Section of Religious books and Languages, and 4 books from other Sectional Libraries.

The members of the teaching staff of the language departments, can borrow the text books prescribed for their subject for a period of one academic year from the General Library in addition to the number of books otherwise allowed to them.

A member of the non-teaching staff is allowed to borrow three books at a time only from the General Library. (General means languages and religious books sections)

Books borrowed other than text books should be returned within a period of one month by members of the teaching staff and all the books should be returned in time for the annual physical stock verification in March every year.

A member of the staff who takes leave for more than six months must return all the books borrowed from the library before proceeding on leave. Those who are taking leave for study purpose can borrow books with the written permission of the Principal for a specified period.

Dog-earing the pages, scribbling on pages, tearing pages, spoiling and injuring the binding will be held to be serious damage to the books and in such cases they are either to be replaced by new copies or got bound by the borrower as the case my be, or the cost thereof should be paid by the borrower.

If a borrower is unable to return the books on the last due date the books would be considered as lost. The library will then take steps to order new ones. If a borrower who is on the staff of the college desires so, the cost would be recovered in not more than 12 instalments.

For lost books the following procedure will be followed: -

If new edition or copies of the lost books are available with the book suppliers, the lost book has to be replaced by a new one.

If the lost book is not available for replacement the value of the lost book will be realised as per the ollowing rules: - Date of publication of the lost book

Amount to be recovered

a) Prior to 1951:- 8 times the original cost or Rs.250/- whichever is higher

b) Between 1951 and 1970:- 6 times the original cost or Rs.250/- whichever is higher

c) Between 1971 and 1990 :- 4 times the original cost or Rs.250/- whichever is higher

d) After 1990 :- twice the original cost

If the book has an archival value, the Library Committee should decide the amount to be recovered.

If the book value cannot be ascertained from the Library Stock Register, compensation will be fixed on the basis of the market price of similar publication at the time of fixation.

The amended rules will come into effect on 01-07-2001
