UGC sponsored National Seminar held on 23rd & 24th October 2014

A two-day UGC sponsored National Seminar titled “Major Issues in Centre State Financial Relations in India” was organised by the Department of Economics on 23rd & 24thOctober, 2014.  Dr T.M Thomas Issac MLA (Former Finance Minister of Kerala & Honorary Fellow  of Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram) inaugurated the seminar which was presided over by Dr Anuradha Balaram IES (Secretary, Kerala Planning Board, Trivandrum). Distinguished economists and policy makers like Prof Praveen Jha (Professor, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi), Prof M.A Oommen (ISS, New Delhi), Prof K.K George (CSES, Kochi), Dr K.M Seethi (Director, Dr K.N Raj Centre,  M.G University, Kottayam), Dr D Narayana (Former Director, Gulati Institute of Finance & Taxation, Thiruvananthapuram) led the various technical sessions of the seminar conducted in association with Dr K.N Raj Centre,  M.G University, Kottayam) . The valedictory address of the National seminar was given by Prof Amit Shovon Ray (Professor, JNU & Director, Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram).

During the course of the seminar various issues on Centre-State Financial Relations in India were deliberated upon in the context of both economic reforms and the changing political milieu.  Constructive ideas on several aspects within this broad discourse like trends in horizontal and vertical transfers, role of Finance Commission, Debt position of States and debt relief by Finance Commissions and 14th Finance Commission were exchanged. The National level seminar provided critical insights to the teachers, researchers and on the theoretical and administrative aspects of federalism in India leading to serious research activity.
