Union Christian College, Aluva organized a padayathra, to mark the centenary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi’s visit to the College

Union Christian College, Aluva organized a padayathra, to mark the centenary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi’s visit to the College, from the College to the Municipal Town Hall via Aluva Manappuram. Manoj K. Das, Editor, Mathrubhumi Daily and Digital, flagged off the padayathra. He also offered a pushparchana in front of a portrait of the Mahatma.

Prof. Dr. Mini Alice [Principal], Dr. K. P. Ouseph IFS (Retd.) [Manager], Sundaram Govind [Retired District Judge], Govindankutty Menon [Former faculty of the College] and Dr. Ajalesh B. Nair spoke on the occasion.

The padayathra featuring around one thousand students, teachers, non-teaching staff, alumni, PTA representatives, former teaching and non-teaching members of the staff and others was welcomed at the Aluva Municipal Town Hall under the aegis of M. O. John, Municipal Chairperson.

Swami Devatmananda, on behalf of Advaita Ashrama, Riyaz A. J. , alumnus and State Secretary of the Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samiti, Amjad Abdul Majeed, College Union Chairperson and Lt. Nino Baby offered felicitations at the public meeting, following the padayathra.

Various resident associations, alumni, representatives, representatives from Advaita Ashrama, representatives of Valath Jewellery and others arranged receptions for the participants. Medical assistance was provided by Rajagiri Hospital.

Mahatma Gandhi’s visit to Union Christian College, on March 18, 1925, was set in the backdrop of the the Vaikom Satyagraha. Gandhi planted a mango sapling in the College courtyard and wrote in the College Visitor’s Diary, ‘Delighted with the Ideal Situation’. The mango sapling planted by the Mahatma is known as Gandhimaavu and is still preserved by the College.

2025 which marks the centennial of Gandhiji’s visit, has been titled Gandhivarsham. The Principal has informed that the College has envisaged year-long programmes consisting of lecture series, exhibitions, public meetings, film festival and various competitions.
