Rev. Thomas John assumes charge as the Manager of U.C College

Rev. Thomas john assumes office as the Manager of the Union Christian College for the second term beginning from June 1, 2020. The College greatly appreciates his efficient leadership of the College during the last four years. We wish that under his able and visionary leadership the College would be led to greater heights of academic achievement and contribution to society as it reaches its centenary in 2021.

He is an alumnus of the 1963-67 batch of the U. C. College; subsequently he served the college as prof. of Psychology and its HOD for 33 years till his retirement in 2003 after 33 years of service. He made several excursions during his tenure in the College which helped him to expand the horizon of his knowledge and experience. He served the Student Christian Movement of India as its General Secretary for 4 years from 1990-’94 and then, for the next one year (1994-’95), the Presbyterian Church in USA as Mission Partner in Residence in its Head Quarters in Louisville, Kentucky. He continued his associations with the Presbyterian Church even after his retirement from the College and is largely responsible for getting the seed money for constructing the present MB Block (Psychology block) from the Presbyterian Women.

It was his vision and commitment that is reflected in the establishment of the Center for Human Potentials and Community Development (CHPCD), a nodal agency of the College for its international linkages, community extension programs, innovative academic initiatives, ancillary programs and other continuing education activities of the College. It was his single-minded devotion to the college that made him turn the Young Adult Volunteer program of the Presbyterian Church (USA) in India of which he was the Coordinator into a program of the CHPCD, called Community Development internship program. He also facilitated the signing of an MOU by the College with the Association of the Presbyterian Colleges and Universities in America (APCUA). Many partnership relationships with Colleges in the US were forged during his tenure. Rev. Thomas John remained as a Missionary of the Presbyterian Church (USA) in India till 2012 and served the Church in the Capacity of the Coordinator of Its International Hunger Ministry, facilitating the network of Small and Marginal farmers in South India.

His family was one that closely associated with the College; Prof. T. B. Ninan and Prof. T. B. Thomas were his uncles. The Late Rt. Rev. T. B. Benjamin, a distinguished alumnus of the College, who had been a student in the early days of the College, and a devoted Bishop of the Church of South India, was also his uncle.

With all these credentials and experiences, it is believed that he will be eminently suited to lead the institution as the College approaches its Centenary in the midst of adversities of the COVID 19 pandemic and other daunting problems we face as a nation and all over the world.

We wish him good luck.
