The Founder’s Day 2017 @ UCC

The 96th Founder’s Day was celebrated in a solemn function at VMA hall on 2nd November  2017. The function was presided  over  by  the Principal  Dr. Thomas Mathew  P.   The Manager   Rev. Prof. Thomas  John  delivered   the Founder’s  Memorial  reference.  The  gathering  of  former teachers,  administrative  staff,  alumni,  current  faculty and  students  was  welcomed  by  the  Old  Students’  Association Secretary, Dr. M I Punnoose.

The Founder’s Day address was delivered by renowned novelist and alumnus of UC College, Sri. T D Ramakrishnan. Author of novels like Alpha and Fracis Itty Corra, Sri. T D Ramakrishnan grabbed public attention recently by bagging this year’s Vayalar Ramavarma Literary Award for his work Sugandi Enna Andal Devanayaki (2014).

The author began his address by recollecting his pre-degree and degree-days spent  in  the  college from  1976-81.  His  first  published  work, a  poem titled Vidarnnnenkil, appeared in the UC College Magazine of 1976. He remembered fondly his teachers, particularly Prof. E Narayanan Nambiar, his batchmates and the  literary  and  cultural  events  held  in the college  during  the  time.  He acknowledged the role that the vibrant campus of UC College had played in shaping his worldview and literary sensibility.

He spoke at length about the great leaps made by the present generation, and in particular the contributions of Malayalis in all walks of life. He cited instances of writers Arundhati Roy, Benyamin, K R Meera and T P Rajeevan, who have carved a space of their own in the international and national literary scene.  In contrast to the general perception, the author argued that the current youth is truly dynamic and is making meaningful contributions to our society.
