1st Anniversary of Thanalidam

Thanalidam Eco-Thrift Shop, which was initiated as part of the centenary celebrations of Union Christian College, Aluva, celebrated it’s first anniversary on 8th November, 2024 with a myriad of programmes. The inauguration of ‘Nattidam’, an exhibition and sale, featuring merchandise of women entrepreneurs and children, was carried out by Dr. E.N. Sivadasan (NSS Coordinator, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam).

An amount of Rs. 1 lakh, collected by Thanalidam, the NSS-NCC units and the Disaster Management Club of UC College, for aiding rehabilitation activities in Wayanad, was handed over to Dr. E.N. Sivadasan. In addition to this, computers were handed over to the Chamaparambu Government LP School under the auspices of Thanalidam and the NSS Unit.

As part of maintaining an eco-friendly environment in the campus, exploring the re-usability potential of plastic, ‘bottle booths’ were set up on campus in collaboration with the OSA-UAE Chapter of College.

Seats, recycled and manufactured by Carbon and Wales, from plastic waste collected by NSS and NCC volunteers in collaboration with Thanalidam, has been installed in various locations on Campus.

The public meeting, held to mark the first anniversary of Thanalidam, was inaugurated by the renowned wildlife photographer N.A. Naseer, at 2 pm at the ML Pankajakshi Conference Centre. The Swaralaya and D-Trix clubs showcased an array of performances. A digital exhibition of N.A. Naseer’s photographs was also arranged.

This was followed by the screening of the documentary ‘Alarm Call’ by Green Grace Productions. The Thanalidam website, developed by a team of students from the Content Writing Course, as part of their service-learning project, was launched on the occasion.

The use of plastic-free biodegradable cups will be fully implemented on campus as part of reducing environmental pollution and for providing future generations, an inspiration in environmental protection. The official announcement was declared by the College Manager, Dr. K.P. Ouseph IFS (Retd.).

Thanalidam was formally inaugurated on 9th November, 2023, by the Aluva Municipal Chairperson, M.O. John. “This initiative, called Thanalidam, has received a good reception among the college community, its neighbouring residents and enterprises and is continuing its journey”, Principal Prof. (Dr.) Mini Alice said.
