International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

In connection with the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking which falls of June 26, the Anti-Narcotic club of Union Christian College, Aluva organized awareness sessions for the Final Year Degree students of the college in association with the JCI, Cochin. JCI is a youth organization which provides development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change. The awareness sessions were based on the theme ‘Share drug facts to save lives’, in line with the theme of the International day.

The resource persons for the sessions were Mr. V. T. Job, Former District Coordinator, Vimukthi mission and faculty coordinator of Nasha Mukth Bharat Abhiyan under the Social Justice Department, Mr. Shibin Shaji Varghese, District Coordinator, Dream Kochi, Don Bosco Psychosocial support Centre, and Ms. Afra Shahjahan, Counsellor, Nirmal Mukthi Sadan, Ernakulam. The sessions were held simultaneously at three venues, the VMA Hall (for III BA and III BSM students), the MCA Seminar Hall (for III B.Sc. students) and MBA Conference Hall (for III B. Com. students) from 11.30 am to 12.30 pm. The College Principal Dr. M. I. Punnoose, the Student Dean Major K. S. Narayanan, and the Academic Dean Dr. M. Anilkumar chaired the sessions in the three venues.

The sessions were intended to spread awareness among students about the alarmingly increasing rate of drug abuse in campuses and how it affects individual lives.  The sessions threw light upon drug abuse as a menace and the resource persons were keen at providing real life examples of those addicted to various kinds of drugs. The biological, and psychological effects of drugs were discussed in the sessions.  It also enabled students to understand the need to seek professional help in the case of victims of drug abuse. The programme was coordinated by the student volunteers and faculty members of the Anti-Narcotic Club, UCC.
